FAQS
WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is an obstructive disease and is caused by a blockage of the hair follicle. Most people believe that acne is caused by too much oil in the skin, but while in some people the blockage is caused by an overproduction of oil, in people it can be caused by dry, dead skin cells blocking the pores.
IS ACNE TREATABLE?
Yes. We can treat 90% of acne problems without harmful drugs or medication. A major part of our treatment protocol is to help he client understand why they get acne, how they can manage it and when to take action.
DO YOU TREAT CHILDREN FOR ACNE?
Absolutely – we believe it is important to help children with acne to ensure that their self-esteem is not affected. Typically we see children aged 14+ but require a parent’s consent and attendance at the treatment.
WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?
Microdermabrasion is now our first line treatment for acne although cystic acne and scarring require other treatments too. Microdermabrasion treats the two key problems causing acne – blockage of the hair follicle and dead skin cells that clog pores and congest the skin. Microdermabrasion combines diamond abrasion tips with suction to help loosen dead skin cells and debris while cleaning out the pores.
IS MICRODERMABRASION PAINFUL?
The treatment is not painful although at the start of your acne program your skin may be tender because of acne infection. This will improve as your treatment progresses and the acne clears. Many clients find the process relaxing.
HOW QUICKLY WILL I SEE RESULTS?
To a large extent the speed of results depend on the severity of your acne is and how well you follow our acne program. Normally you will see improvement in a matter of a few weeks. Our aim is to have you free of active acne in three months wherever possible, but this does not necessarily mean that your skin will be completely normal, but you should have no active, infected lesions.
HOW WILL I LOOK IMMEDIATELY AFTER MICRODERMABRASION?
Your skin will be pink or red due to increased circulation in the skin caused by the microdermabrasion treatment. This usually subsides within six to twelve hours. Where blocked hair follicles have been cleaned out, there may be red marks which will take two to three days to settle.
I HAVE CYSTIC ACNE – CAN YOU HELP ME?
Cystic acne is the most difficult to treat, but we are able to assist with that too. Fractional Radio Frequency assists to shrink the oil glands which over-produce - causing cystic acne - and in doing so reduce oil flow. At the same time, we use Microdermabrasion and/or Peels to work on the more superficial congestion.
WHAT ABOUT ACNE SCARRING?
Acne scarring can also be addressed in a number of ways depending on severity, the age of the scar and the condition of your skin. At Ultimate Skin and Body Clinics, we use Micro-Needling, Fractional Radiotherapy or Fraxel Laser to address scars.
WHY IS MY FACE RED WHERE MY ACNE SPOTS USED TO BE?
Redness is a good sign as this is your body's healing response to trauma or injury. Increased blood flow in the area delivers nutrients to your skin and assists repair the skin cells. However, many acne sufferers feel the redness looks as bad as the acne spots themselves, so we recommend a short course of laser or LED to reduce the redness and calm the skin down.
